Hybrids of Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca on ponds near Frauenfeld (canton of Thurgau), Switzerland. Since 1996 several hybrids between Ferruginous Ducks Aythya nyroca and other diving ducks have been observed on wetlands in the Thur plain near Frauenfeld. Most often hybrids between Ferruginous Duck and Tufted Ducks A. fuligula have been observed. Apart from 2004, they occurred every year in spring, with observations between 1 April and 24 June. In 2009, they were recorded for the first time in winter, between 27 January and 24 March. On 30 April 2007 and between 8 April and 21 May 2009 2–3 different hybrid individuals were present simultaneously. Hybrids between Ferruginous Ducks and Common Pochards A. ferina were observed only in two years, a male on both occasions. Males of hybrids between Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks showed a high degree of variation. Mostly they resembled males of Tufted Ducks with pale to brownish flanks. The undertail coverts showed only a little bit of white and the iris was pale yellow. The top of the head was reddish-brown in all individuals.
